The New Lancia Ypsilon HF: A Sporty Model Set to Launch in May 2025

Lancia has released preview images of the new sporty version of the Ypsilon. The HF initials will once again be featured on the brand’s models, with the Ypsilon being the first to debut in May 2025.

The new Lancia Ypsilon will arrive in Spain at the end of the year. In a few days, we’ll share the first driving impressions of the debut model from the revived brand, which until now has only sold cars in Italy. During its presentation a few months ago, the brand’s CEO, Luca Napolitano, also announced the arrival of a sporty HF version for 2025, which we can now see in images. This high-performance model will be fully electric, aligning with the Italian brand’s electrification plan. Starting in 2026 with the launch of the Gamma SUV, Lancia will only release electric models. By 2028, when the new compact Delta arrives, the brand will completely phase out internal combustion engines.

The car will make its market debut in May 2025. Following the Lancia Ypsilon HF, the Gamma and Delta will also have HF versions.

With the new Ypsilon HF, Lancia draws inspiration from its past, reinterpreting it. Few technical details are known about this high-performance variant: it will be powered by a 240 hp electric motor, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. The Ypsilon HF will feature a lowered suspension, widened track, and aggressive, muscular shapes inspired by the brand’s most iconic and radical cars.

It’s developed by the manufacturer’s Motorsport division, which has also announced a return to rallying. The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF will mark Lancia’s re-entry into the highest level of the WRC. This rally car is powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine with 4 valves per cylinder, producing 212 hp.

HF: A Legacy of High Performance

The HF initials represent Lancia’s high-performance models. This historic designation was first introduced in 1960 at the Geneva Motor Show when a group of passionate Lancia car owners founded the “Lancia Hi-Fi” club (Hi-Fi stands for High-Fidelity). This exclusive club was dedicated to the brand’s most loyal customers, reserved for those who had bought at least six new Lancia cars. The HF logo then became a hallmark of the HF Squadra Corse Lancia, founded in 1963 by Cesare Fiorio along with some drivers and passionate Lancia car owners.

The historic logo featured the white HF initials on a black background, with four red elephants running, and at the bottom, in white capital letters on a red background, the words SQUADRA CORSE. The elephant was chosen as a good luck charm (it appears in several parts of the new Ypsilon HF), given the legend that once these animals start running, they are unstoppable, thus becoming a symbol of performance and driving pleasure.
